Curls Without Heat

It’s getting hot and humid out and for some going straight doesn’t work, so ladies just ease the frustration and embrace the waves and curls!  Another great thing about going curly for the summer is that there are different ways to create curls and waves without heat…that’s right you can still get a cute style this summer without making yourself even hotter.  An easy way to start off is just by a simple braid.  Just braid your hair when it’s wet and let it dry in the braid; this works great if you want to sleep in the braid and just undo it in the morning.  Play around with big braids and little braids to see what you like best.  Bantu knots are also super easy and make a great curl to your hair.  Put your hair into sections (the more sections the more curl)  and twist your hair around and around until it starts to create a knot and then pin it once it is tight against your scalp.  Let them dry, unpin them, and admire your Bantu knotted curls.

A super easy way to get waves without heat is to twist your hair into a bun and sleep on it.  In the morning undo your bun to revel simple natural waves.  Rag curls are an oldie but a goody!  Just twist sections of your hair around scrap fabric starting at the ends, then secure the hair by knotting the fabric, let it dry and untie.  You can also create a different variation with other things around the house including pipe cleaners–get creative.  To get a really different type of curl try pin curls.  To create a pin curl you section off the hair and roll the hair up to the head as if you had a roller and then secure with a bobby pin. You can either or lay them flat against the head.  keep the curls big

Towne & Reese and Twistbands Now at Lather!!

Lather is so excited to now be carrying the Towne and Reese Jewelry line and Twistbands.  Twistbands are the latest hair tie and accessory that won’t dent or damage your hair and have been worn by many celebrities such as Kristin Cavalari, Kendall Jenner, Gwyneth Paltrow, and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills just to name a few.  The soft super comfortable elastic bands are durable and will hold your pony in its place no matter what you are doing.  Our favorite part is that they also double as a cute accessory while on your wrist instead of a grungy old plain hair tie.  Towne & Reese is an amazing jewelry line that is super fashionable AND  affordable.  You may have seen Emily Maynard from The Bachelorette wearing tons of the amazing Towne and Reese jewelry.  She is a huge fan of the line and is also from the Charlotte, North Carolina area where Towne and Reese is based.  Come check out both lines at Lather we have an amazing selection and variety of both Twistbands and Towne & Reese jewelry and we are so excited to share both of these lines with everyone!!

With the smoldering summer months fast approaching cute hair is going to be even more difficult to achieve.  But don’t forget about the amazingly diverse headband!  Headbands are perfect for summer because they not only will spice up a simple ponytail or bun but it will also keep the humid induced fly aways to a minimum.  Another great thing about headbands is the vast variety of headbands so you can mix and match to go with any outfit and they work great with all hair types and lengths!  So go out and stock up on some super cute headbands and get ready for the hot summer months.

what is balayage?

So one of the new color trends popping up right now is balayage, but what the heck is it.  Balayage is a French technique that was developed in the 1970s and it literally means “to paint”.  It is technique that can be done numerous ways depending on the stylists preference and clients needs/wants but is usually done as more of a free hand technique.  It can be compared to the ombre technique; however, the difference between the two techniques is the ombre is dark roots with a gradation of color to the light ends, whereas the balayage is more of sun-kissed look.  Like the ombre though it is low maintenance and cost-effective which makes it great for todays busy woman.  It is also the perfect look for summer since your hair is going to naturally lighten with the sun.  This way you are not throwing your money away and you can embrace the light sun-kissed look for the pool and beach days.

It’s all about the eyebrows

So your eyebrows can really make or break the way your face looks, they offer definition and frame your eyes; and they really can not be ignored.  It’s hard sometimes, you get caught up in the daily grind of going, going, going and then one day we look in the mirror and it seems that your eyebrows are taking over you face, not a good feeling!  Everyone has different shaped eyebrows that accentuate certain facial features so the shaping of a persons eyebrows is very individualized.  To find your brow’s starting point, all you need to do is hold a thin makeup brush against your nose.  The point where the brush touches your brow is going to be your starting point.  As for your brow’s end, tilt the same brush from your nose diagonally until it lands on a point at the corner of your eye.  Then according to your face shape, size, and features your eyebrows and then be shaped to accurate your face.  In the image you can see exactly how to get the right shaped brows based on your eye shape and how much of a difference it can make.

There  are numerous different ways to keep your eyebrows in shape.  There is the traditional tweezer method, threading which is done with a pure, thin, twisted cotton thread, and waxing done with hot wax and wax strip.  With tweezing you are only getting rid of one hair at a time which can be time-consuming and you can also get easily carried away.  Then there is threading and waxing which get rid of multiple hairs at one time so it is more time effective and also offers a cleaner line.  Threading is gaining popularity lately but some say it can be more painful than waxing or tweezing so it may take some time to get us to.  Then there is waxing which is extremely popular because it is quick and the pain is more minimal.  Which ever method you prefer eyebrow shaping is a must, so no more excuses!! And that goes for you men too, your eyebrows need to be trimmed up as well. Everyone needs to be keeping up with nicely framed polished eyebrows, it really does make a huge impact on how your face looks.

Hair Tinsel

Hair Tinsel is a great way to add some sparkle to your hair just in time for the holidays!  What makes hair tinsel so great are the variety of colors and the flexibility of taking them in and out of your hair.  Just like this summers hair feather trend; hair tinsel is attached to a few strands of hair with a microbead that holds it in tight for as long as you would like but is also very easy to remove.  Lather now has hair tinsel in a variety of colors and are priced at 5 strands for $10!  You can also style them just like your own hair with blowdryers, flat irons, and curling irons.  They can be personalized for each person, you can make them blend into your hair color or you can make them stand out against your hair color.  They are a great way to add some glam for all of those holiday parties!

Ombre Hair Color

This two toned hair color tend became popular during the summer months because it gives a sun-kissed look but is still continuing into the fall months.  The ombre trend has easy maintenance with those who color their hair because you are able to color your hair less which, also makes it is less expensive.  Ombre hair is defined as hair color fading from dark to light, or vice-versa but in a gradual sense, you are able to embrace the natrual  lighting of your ends.  We typically see the ombre locks are darker or more natural at the roots and lighter at the bottom.  This look can be very distinctive or a more subtle look.  Its young, fresh and a more care-free look that can be done with any hair color.  If you are intrested in this look you can always talk to your stylist to see what steps you can do to get your ombre hair color.
