Fall Makeup Trends

Wow it really feels like some fall weather here in NC today!  With comes fall comes all the fall fashion and makeup!!  In for this fall is the unfinished lip with deep rich pigments.  Added bonus to this trend is that it is super easy, just dab a small amount of lip stain, stick, creme, or gloss in the center of your lips and press lips together.  Smudge with your finger following the natural lines of your lips and your done.  Another fall trend is super matte, shine-free skin, just start with an oil control moisturizer and primers and finish with a matte foundation.

Glitter Glitter Everywhere!  Glitter always seems to come out during the fall, especially as we inch closer to the holidays.  The proper way to apply glitter eyeshadow is to wet your brush a little before transferring glitter from the container to the eyelid and press it onto the eyelid, don’t sweep the glitter that way there is less fall out.

Not only is the unfinished lip in, so is the super finished lip with rich pigment and lip liner to match.  Just line lips with lip liner and match with a lip stick of the same color, apply, and smudge into lip liner until it all blends.

Dramatic angled eyeliner is all the rage, start by tracing the line starting from the outer lower lash line–not the upper lash line–upward and out; this is your guideline for the angled part of your liner wing.

The hot new runway makeup look is brow-to-lash color, you’re thinking crazy right, how could that ever be acceptable?  This brazen move can be achieved by using just one eyeshadow color and diffuse or build up where needed to create graduation.  Pro tip:  “use a wet brush to intensify the color at the lash line and work your way up the eye through the crease and to the brow, using a blending blush to get a softer pigment for graduation effect.” -Ferro

Summer Skin Quick Tips!

As the weather starts to warm there are different skin problems that you have to worry about, especially in the south!  Here are some solutions to some common summertime skin problems.

It’s pretty much inevitable that at some point during the summer months you’ll lay out a little too long with too little sun protection.  To help soothe the pain and swelling from a sunburn immediately take two aspirin or ibuprofen as soon as possible.  You can also make milk compresses by soaking a washcloth in a bowl of ice-cold whole milk and drape it over the burn until the cloth is room temperature.

The recommended intake for H2O is 8 glasses and beneficial for your entire body including your skin!  The proper intake of water and proper amount of sleep can help keep your skin clear, healthy, and give you an extra glow.

Your skin needs an afternoon pick-up too!  According to a recent study, women look oldest at exactly 3:30 pm on Wednesday afternoons…no bueno! That is when stress levels peak and energy levels drop and ultimately leaving your skin dry, grungy, and blah.  To combat the afternoon blah skin you can pat a little lotion on your cheeks, under your eyes, and anywhere else you need to get a little extra glow and get you through the rest of the day.

Exfoliation is key to healthy skin but there is a limit! Make sure you are not rubbing aggressively because that can lead to irritation.  A scrub is designed to do the work for you so just put it on like you would a moisturizer to get glowy-not red-skin.

Do you always seem to attract mosquitos?  Try taking a daily vitamin B12 supplement!  Studies show that it causes your skin to give off a scent that repels mosquitoes that only the mosquitos can smell.  If you do get a mosquito bite an ice cube over the area.  It tricks your nerves so you don’t feel the itch anymore.

So you have a big event or date that you have been awaiting and of course you get a pimple right before, that’s always how it works right?  Well never fear just wet the tip of a cotton swab with Listerine and dab it on the spot.  The alcohol in the rinse dries the zit fast!  Then you will be all set for you big event 🙂

Breaking out from sunscreen?  Try a mineral sunscreen, the active ingredients (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or both) sit on top of the skin instead of being absorbed so you are less likely to have a breakout.

Here in good ol’ North Carolina we are no strangers to the heat and worst of all is the high humidity levels we have.  You can stay drier longer by using an antiperspirant that is clinical strength.  These antiperspirants have the highest level of sweat shields to block sweat glands temporarily.  You can even glide some on other hot spots like your lower back or cleavage to keep dry there too.

Backne is the worst! Especially in the summer with all your cute strappy summer dresses.  Shampoos and conditioners can leave an oily film on your shoulders and back so make sure to thoroughly rinse your hair AND your skin before getting out of the shower.

Razor burn is just about as bad as the backne!  Clam razor burn by applying a thin coat of one-percent hydrocortisone cream or Aquaphor Healing Ointment to soothe inflammation.  And make sure to keep the area out of the sun until it heals since UV exposure can worsen the bumps and irritation.

5 Hair Time Drains and How to Remedy Them

Does your hair seem to be taking up more and more of your time?  Here are some solutions to a few common hair time drains.

Time Drain #1-You start blow-drying your hair too soonrusk speed freak

It takes longer to style dripping wet hair and it is more prone to breaking at this stage.  Save time and your hair by flipping your head over and blow dry to get the excess water out (added bonus this will give you great volume!).  Then flip your head over and blow dry to get the excess water out (added bonus this will give you great volume!).   Then pin or clip it up and let it air dry some while you continue getting your outfit or some of your make-up started.  When your hair is about 80% dry start styling it by pinning it in sections, and while using a round blow dry the rest of your hair dry section by section.  It is important to use a concentrator on your blow dryer at this step (see left for image).  A concentrator allows all the air flow to be focused on the one section you are working on and cuts down on frizz and fly a ways.

Time Drain #2-You wash your hair too often

Just because you are taking a shower does not mean you need to wash your hair.  Unless your hair is oily or you have product build-up you should not wash your hair.  The longer you can go without washing your hair will not only save you time but will also be healthier for your hair.  Crazy I know, it sounds so backwards to not wash your hair.  But shampoos are cleansers – they are meant to get everything out of your hair and clean your scalp and unfortunately shampoos not only take the gunk out of your hair but also removes the essential sebum or oil from your scalp your hair needs and dries out strands as well.  If you find your hair to be too dry it is probably because you are washing it too frequently.  Depending on your hair type you should only be washing your hair 3-4 times per week and again the longer you can go the better!  Another added bonus to washing your hair as often if you color your hair is that the color is going to last longer, the more you wash your hair the more the color is going to fade.  Skipping the wash also allows you to skip the blow dry and the less heat you can put on your hair the better!  So save money and again time and the health of your hair and don’t wash it so much ladies.

Time Drain #3-You don’t know how to fix a bad hair day

Some days you just can’t fit your hair you just have to go with it.  If you have short hair embrace the messy look!  Apply a dime-size amount of pomade to your hair and tousle it with your fingers this will make your hair instantly modern but put together.  For longer hair try a topknot which is all the rage right now!  It might take a little practice so you may want to try it when you have some time on   your hands to master everything.  Start by putting your hair into a high ponytail, then dividing the tail into three sections.  Wrap the first section loosely around the elastic band and bobby pin it  in place.  Continue with the other two sections wrapping them in the same direction around the elastic and secure them with bobby pins.  This will create a big, slightly messy, high bun perfect for any occasion and add a bold lip color like Lauren Conrad to really spice up your look!

Time Drain #4-You use too many products

whipped cremeIf your hair is limp, greasy, dull, or lifeless especially right after you wash it odds are you are using too many products.  If you are layering product after product and still not getting the results you are looking for and then compensate with layering more products you are using the wrong products for your hair.  When it comes to products less is more we promise,  you should only be using a maximum of four products-shampoo, conditioner, styler, and finisher.  Using any more is weighing your hair down and is probably making you wash your hair more and in turn damaging it more.  If you are a product junky then start but limiting your hair product arsenal to the bare essentials and by using a clarifying cleanser to start fresh and remove all the product build up.  Here at Lather Hair Salon we use and highly recommend Nioxin’s Clarifying Cleanser, it gently neutralizes hard water mineral deposits, chlorine and environmental and styling product build-up.  As far as the bare essentials you should have a professional brand shampoo (if you color your hair make sure it is a color-protecting shampoo to add more life to your color), a professional moisturizing conditioner, a root-lifting spray or mousse or some sort of heat protectant (we live by Sebastian lite weight Whipped Creme Styling Whip at Lather-added bonus it smells just like whipped cream!), and finally a finishing spray or polish to smooth everything.  Again if you can not get the look you want with the four products you are using the wrong ones for you hair and should consult your stylist about what would work best for your hair type.

Time Drain #5-You have the wrong cut for your lifestyle

If you can’t maintain your haircut at home yourself, it is too high maintenance for your needs.  When you go to your stylist it is very important to be as honest as possible about home much time you will and are able to put into your hair on a daily basis and to be honest about your hair skill level.  On the other side of this it is extremely important that your stylist is asking you these questions and is able to educate you on your hair.  Don’t resist your hair type, you are only torturing yourself-work with what you got!  If your hair is fine and straight consider a blunt chin to shoulder length bob; your hair will fall in sheets that stack up building volume.  For thicker straight hair graduated layers that are shortest at the shoulder and taper down the back works best because it gives your hair movement.  If it’s fine but wavier go for a shoulder length or shorter layered look; the layers build body and you won’t constantly be working to make your hair straight because it’s not in a precise bob.  If your hair is thick and wavy you may need a few layers so that it doesn’t get too heavy and is best to have it shoulder length or longer.  Another haircut mistake people make that add time to their everyday routines are bangs.  You shouldn’t have to fight them every morning, not everyone is cut out for bangs.  Like the rest of your hair make sure to ask your stylist to work with your natural texture and part when cutting your bangs.  If you have a cowlick your bangs will need to be thick and heavy.  If you have course or wavy hair get your bangs cut on an angle (shorter over one eye and longer over the other) that way they won’t have to lie perfectly flat.  If your hair is super straight don’t fight mother nature with a side bang instead go with short, straight bangs that just graze the eyebrows.  Use the weight of your hair and it’s natural texture to your advantage, don’t fight mother nature!

Adding Volume to Your Hair

A lot of women struggle with having limp lifeless hair and it can be a bit overwhelming when trying to figure out what will work to add more volume to your hair.  Here are a few different easy tips to try to get the most volume out of your hair.  The first thing is super easy and simple try adjusting your part.  Your hair can get use to the same part you use so try mixing it up by parting it to the side if you usually part in the middle to part the opposite way or in the middle if you part to the side.

Of course if you are looking for more volume, volumizing products are a must!  Lather Hair Salon carries and recommends Sebastian’s Volupt line of shampoo and conditioner for a great shampoo/conditioner while still adding volume.  Revolutionary cushion particle technology constructs your hair into a harmony of soft volumes while shielding-in the lightness for a color safe shampoo and conditioner.  Sebastian’s Volupt Spray can provide extra volume after using Volupt shampoo and conditioner.  Just apply to damp hair and blow-dry as normally done.  Some other amazing root and volume boosting products that Lather offers are Aquage uplifting foam, Nioxin root lifter (which is great for thinning or very fine hair), and Big Sexy Hair’s Backcomb in a Bottle which is applied to dry hair to add even more lift after dried.

Another great tip to add more volume to your hair that a lot of people do not think about is to not wash your hair too often.  We have mentioned in previous posts about how actually washing your hair less is better for it.  This is because it doesn’t dry it out as much and it will also help build up your volume because it is a little dirtier.  You are probably thinking well that’s all fine and good but what about my extremely greasy hair.  I have the solution…dry shampoo!  This miracle in a can/bottle seriously needs to be in everyone’s beauty supply for this reason just spray some at the roots and you are good to go until your next wash.  It is a much better way of getting a few more days in between your washes to make your hair that much healthier.

Believe it or not adding some color to your hair also adds some volume through dimension.  If you already color your hair it is an added bonus and if you don’t you can always work your way in.  Hair color can be overwhelming but finding the right salon and stylist to really work with you on what your hair wants and needs are is key!  The great thing about color is that you can do a lot or just a little.  Lather Hair Salon offers a great intro into color with our 10 foils or less service.  It is exactly what it says and you can just add some face framing highlights to add dimension and introduce you into the wonderful world of color!

Trying out a different cut and style could also boost your volume.  Again having a trained and qualified stylist that knows hair type and textures is key.  Also being completely up front with your stylist to let them know your hair routine is very important.  If you are someone who spends minimal time on styling your hair daily then your stylist should be recommending a very different haircut for you.  Compared to someone who spends a lengthy amount of time styling their hair daily.

Besides dry shampoo a teasing brush is going to be your best friend when it comes to adding volume.  The great thing about a teasing or backcombing is that you can add just a little or you can add a lot for a big night on the town, it is all up to you.  Do however be gentle because teasing too much and too often can damage hair so just ease your way into it and see what amount works best for your hair.

Curls add tons of volume so if you are lucky enough to have curly, wavy, or if you hair is able to hold curl fairly well this will be your best volumizing technique!  If you have natural curl/wave you can just wear your hair that way.  Simply add a little curl cream, Tigi’s Catwalk Curlesque Collection: Curls Rock Amplifier is Lather’s favorite, and let it air dry or you can also diffuse it.  A diffuser can be purchased pretty inexpensively from pretty much any local store and you can get a universal one to slip onto the end of your blow dryer.  The way it works is it just spreads or diffuses the air so that the curls hold their definition.  If your hair does not have naturally curl/wave or if you want to enhance your natural body you can simply supplement with a curling iron.

If you have not been blessed with curly/wavy hair and your hair refuses to hold any curls you try to put into it, don’t worry you can go the other route.  You can now focus your efforts on an amazing blow out.  The key to a great blow out is sections!  Small sections allow you to concentrate the heat from your blow dryer and it helps with the manageability of having to hold the blow dryer and round brush.  Another tip for a great blow out is finding the right size of round brush so that it is not too small if you have long hair and not too big if you have short hair.

No matter how much volume you are looking to put into your hair these tips are all great and can be used individually or combined.  Everyone can increase the volume of their hair with just a little work!!

Curls Without Heat

It’s getting hot and humid out and for some going straight doesn’t work, so ladies just ease the frustration and embrace the waves and curls!  Another great thing about going curly for the summer is that there are different ways to create curls and waves without heat…that’s right you can still get a cute style this summer without making yourself even hotter.  An easy way to start off is just by a simple braid.  Just braid your hair when it’s wet and let it dry in the braid; this works great if you want to sleep in the braid and just undo it in the morning.  Play around with big braids and little braids to see what you like best.  Bantu knots are also super easy and make a great curl to your hair.  Put your hair into sections (the more sections the more curl)  and twist your hair around and around until it starts to create a knot and then pin it once it is tight against your scalp.  Let them dry, unpin them, and admire your Bantu knotted curls.

A super easy way to get waves without heat is to twist your hair into a bun and sleep on it.  In the morning undo your bun to revel simple natural waves.  Rag curls are an oldie but a goody!  Just twist sections of your hair around scrap fabric starting at the ends, then secure the hair by knotting the fabric, let it dry and untie.  You can also create a different variation with other things around the house including pipe cleaners–get creative.  To get a really different type of curl try pin curls.  To create a pin curl you section off the hair and roll the hair up to the head as if you had a roller and then secure with a bobby pin. You can either or lay them flat against the head.  keep the curls big

Spice up your hair with a cute headband!

With the smoldering summer months fast approaching cute hair is going to be even more difficult to achieve.  But don’t forget about the amazingly diverse headband!  Headbands are perfect for summer because they not only will spice up a simple ponytail or bun but it will also keep the humid induced fly aways to a minimum.  Another great thing about headbands is the vast variety of headbands so you can mix and match to go with any outfit and they work great with all hair types and lengths!  So go out and stock up on some super cute headbands and get ready for the hot summer months.

8 Healthy Skin Must Do’s!

So the secret to healthy skin isn’t necessarily the expensive cleansers or creams, it is actually just making sure to follow a well-balanced routine.  The first seems simple enough cleanse and moisturizer right?  Well as simple as it may be it is often overlooked before and after a long busy day starts and ends.  It is so important to start your day with a clean moisturized face and to end the day the same way.  Also finding the right moisturizer for your skin type is whether it is more oily or dry definitely finding the right moisturizer for you is key!

Not only do you need to clean your face you also need to make sure the things that touch your face are clean, especially your make-up tools.  Cleaning your make-up once a week is not only going to keep those built up germs off you skin but it will also prolong the life of your tools.

While washing your face daily does remove most make-up, some heavier make-up such as mascara and eyeliner can remain.  This is when it is important to use a make-up remover to make sure you are able to remove all the make-up from your face, and your bed sheets will thank you for it!

So you go and spend all this money on your make-up and that is why it is so hard to part with it, but just like most things in life your make-up also has an expiration date unfortunately.  It is important to keep track of the age of your make-up and throw it out in a timely manner.  All make-up has very different expiration dates but here are a few guidelines for the most used things:

  1. Mascara, liquid  or gel eyeliners: 4 to 6 months (always toss out dry mascara—never add water to extend its life)
  2. Moisturizers, Serums, & Foundations: 6 months to 1 year
  3. Powder-based products: 2-3 years
  4. Lipsticks., Lip Gloss, & Lip Pencils: 2-3 years

Since you are making all these preparations to keep your skin healthy the next logical thing to do is to protect it by applying sunscreen daily and it’s so simple too!  Just make sure to get a moisturizer that has an added SPF, simple enough so there are no excuses ladies!

Last, but not least, proper amounts of sleep and healthy eating are a must!  Everything you put into your body affects it so make sure to eat healthy and you will definitely the proof in your skin.  Also making sure to get enough sleep is very important, just like the rest of your body needing rest, your skin does as well.  Getting into a good routine and using these tips will really help your skin get and stay in tip-top shape!

How to make your make-up last all day

You take the time to perfect your make-up each morning only to have just a trace left on by the end of the day, how annoying!  Here are a few tips on how to help your make-up stay on throughout the whole day.  First thing is moisturizing, it will smooth out, hydrate and make your skin ready to accept make-up.

Another problem throughout the day is the smudging and waterproof does not always mean smudge proof unfortunately.  Asking a lot of questions, researching, and trying different products will really make a difference on what works best for you.  Since you are using your make-up on a daily basis it will most likely be worth the extra splurge to get professional make-up that will hold up daily.

Primers are also a must, just apply a little to your eyelids let it dry for a minute, apply your eye shadow and be super amazed by the easier application and longevity of your eye shadow.

Although lip gloss is amazing and gives extra shine to your finished face; however, lip-stains are much better when you are looking for a lip color to stay put for the entire day.  They come in a variety of different colors and brands so you can shop around to find what works best for you lips.  They will stay put during the day no matter what you eat, drink, etc.

Finishing off with a loose powder will help keep your make-up in place and your face less oily throughout the day.  Apply after a cream foundation and follow up with a light brush of loose powder to seal everything in.  If you are still having problems with your skin getting oily by the middle of the day just make sure to pat, don’t wipe!  They even make blotting sheets that help absorb the oils out of your skin.  And just a reminder that if you need your make-up to last throughout the day don’t cake it on because by the middle of the day it is going to settle into your creases and that is not a good look for anyone! a while.
