Ever wondered how celebrities’ hair grows so fast? (“I just saw Halle Berry on a talk show with short hair, now she shows up at an awards banquet with shoulder-length locks!”) Every wonder how their hair has so much volume and bounce?
We’ll let you in on a secret. Two words: hair extensions.
And we have them at Lather Hair Salon.
For most of our clients, there are three different kinds of extensions that would be perfect for volume and length: Clip – In, Glue – In, and Fusion hair extensions.
Clip-in extensions are the easiest type to add for a quick change to your hairstyle at home. They can be made to fit your whole head to add length and/or color, from “natural” blond and browns to bright reds, pinks and even blues. They also come in a variety of colors to add a quick “highlight” look. This type of extension generally has a comb-clip attached to the back and fastens easily to your natural hair. But before you try attaching them yourself, you need to have your stylist cut them to blend with your hair.
Glue-in extensions are great for weddings, the prom, and other special events. They need to be applied in the salon, and they’ll last for about a week. Glue-in extensions are applied to your scalp, between layers of your hair. They add length and volume and look more natural than the clip-in extensions. This is the perfect type of extension when you want your hair to look extra special for a specific event yet keep the cost under control.
Fusion extensions last the longest and should be applied in the salon. With proper care, they last about four to five months. In this process, individual strands of hair are bonded to your natural hair by heat and keratin or heat, keratin, and a tiny bead. The process is very time consuming and more costly than the other two extensions, but it is by far the most natural looking form and will last the longest.
Proper maintenance of any hair extension is very important. Make sure to remove clip-in extensions from your hair before washing. If you have glue-in or fusion extensions, try to keep regular washing to once every two to three days. If you have especially oily hair, try using dry shampoo, such as KMS Makeover Spray.
While shampooing, keep your hair straight — instead of in a ball on top of your head — to avoid tangling. Keep conditioner away from the bonds or adhesive, as it may cause the extensions to slip or loosen. And make sure you are using professional hair care shampoo, conditioner, and styling products. Drugstore brands will break the bonds.
When styling your extensions, keep heat away from the bonds so the adhesive is not compromised. While brushing your hair, you should only use a special comb that is made specifically for extensions. These combs will not pull your extensions out and are generally purchased with your fusion application. Always hold your hair in a ponytail when you are brushing the ends out. For the rest of your hair, hold one hand firmly to the scalp to ensure less shedding of your extensions.
